The Adachi Museum of Art is definitely one of the best sightseeing spots you should visit in Shimane.

The museum was founded by Zenko Adachi in 1980 as a way of combining his passions for Japanese art and garden design. Adachi is known for his famous quote, "the garden is also a part of drawing." He hoped that viewing the gardens and artworks together would expand people’s appreciation and interest in Japanese art.

Since 2003, the museum has been ranked as the best Japanese garden for 15 consecutive years. The ranking was published by the U.S. magazine, The Journal of Japanese Gardening, as part of the Shiosai Project. The project was started by Douglas M. Roth to select the finest Japanese gardens based only on the beauty of the garden. More than 30 international experts participated to decide the ranking by conducting surveys on more than a thousand gardens all over Japan.
